Windy is the name of the owner and pilot of this crop duster.. I was doing a story on Route 13 which runs up the state of Delaware. Windy had his tiny air strip just a few miles North of the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel.. It was actually a garage that would fit his crop duster and a straight dirt road. I saw this scene complete with Windy sitting on a bench in front of his hanger and made a sharp right to turn in. At first Windy wanted nothing to do with me. He was convinced that I was out to do a story on a crop duster spreading harmful chemicals. I explained that it was a story about the highway and that a picture of him was justg a part of the story. No deal. I came back with prints of some of the other pictures that I had made for the story (no IPad in those days). Windy kinda agreed but when I told him that I wanted to mount a camera on the wing of his plane, we were back to no. Finally I showed him that I could munt the camera without making a mark on his machine and tha I would not hold him responsible if the camera flew off. we were on again. I taped a wire from the camera down the fuselage pf the plane and into the cockpit where Windy would trip the shutter. Prefocused witha piece of tape on the lens so the focus would hold, That was possilbe in those days. We went over his route. He was to fly into theun and parallel to the highway. He made three passes. One close, one a little further away and then one that was way to far. I had postcards printed as a promotion effort and gave Windy about two hundred. Unfortanately the magazine that commissioned the story went out of business before the story ran. Photograph by Dennis Brack bb 75
